Use of medical and recreational marijuana continues to gain popularity globally. Yet, consumers from different countries still lack unhampered access to pot. Sales remain restricted whether for adult or medical use except for a few regions. Marijuana legislation varies. So, how do you buy cannabis around the world?
USA and Canada
In the United States, each state has its own set of laws. Some counties or cities can outlaw legal weed sales even in states where the plant has been legalized. Individuals above 21 years of age can purchase medical pot from dispensaries. Those below 21 require doctors’ permissions.
In Canada, you can order medical marijuana through the mail. Couriers deliver the stuff to customers’ homes. Here’s the good news. The Canadian Government will legalize recreational pot on October 17, 2018. Growers can acquire licenses from the federal government. Individual provinces will decide distribution and selling of the products. However, the government maintains a hands-off policy in promotions. According to the monumental Bill, adults can buy cannabis and possess a maximum of 30 grams (dried variety) for personal use.

The City of London consumes the most cannabis (31.4 metric tons) among seven cities in the United Kingdom surveyed recently. Sales of cannabis oil rose from 125,000 (one year ago) to 250,000 at present, according to the UK Cannabis Trade Association after Holland and Barret started to sell this oil. However, the law still does not permit owning, supplying, and consuming weed oil. Ironically, the legislation recognizes Cannabidiol (CBD) as medicine.
Portugal and The Netherlands
The governments of The Netherlands and Portugal decriminalized the use of various medicinal drugs in 2001. Adults are free to buy cannabis seeds along with other products from selected coffee shops in the Netherlands. The Opium Law distinguishes between soft and hard drugs. Soft Drugs mean low risks of addiction and harm. This category includes marijuana.
Portugal’s 30/2000 Law passed in 2000 formally legalized possession and personal consumption of illegal drugs in minimal quantities. There are authorized local dispensaries that sell weed products to help eliminate shady street deals. Yet, tourists must become familiar with terminologies like Maconha or Ganza for marijuana and Charro for joint.
In Mexico, use of recreational pot is also quite lenient. The amount must be five grams or less. Cultivation and sales remain unlawful. Mexican legislators legalized medical cannabis as pharmacological cannabis derivatives for further studies and regulation by the Health Ministry. CBD oils and pills must not contain more than one percent of THC. Consumers can buy cannabis from dealers in posh residences of Puebla City. They sell premium-quality weed starting from around US$10 dollars. Some downtown bars that allow marijuana smoking also sell pot from lower-quality strains.
Jamaica has legalized weed (Ganja) since 2015. According to Jamaican Law, visitors with medical conditions must have a doctor’s prescription from their countries. However you can purchase permits for several dollars at the airport. This allows them to use the medical cannabis. Tours are also organized for trips to marijuana farms in selected areas.
